Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park has been designated
by Travel Green Wisconsin as the first Historical Park to receive
certification. Sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism,
Travel Green Wisconsin recognizes tourism related businesses that
are reducing their environmental impact through operational and
other improvements.
To achieve Travel Green certification, businesses have to meet several
goals, including demonstration of how they encourage staff and vendors
to be environmentally aware, and how they reduce their solid waste
generation and energy consumption. An independent third party, Wisconsin
Environmental Initiative (WEI) certifies Travel Green applicants.
Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park scored 48 points on 9 different
areas, even though only 30 points were required to receive certification.
Highlights of the ways in which The Forts is environmentally responsible
include the fact that the buildings are designed to incorporate
thermal mass to save on heating and cooling, as well as that all
yard waste and grass clippings are composted. The staff and volunteers
have sought to preserve the natural shoreline of the Yellow River.
The business operations at Forts Folle Avoine support the local
community by selling local crafts, promoting local busi¬nesses,
and participating in community activities.
In addition, Kris Schmidt who is the owner of Legacy Solar in Frederic
did a site assessment and feasibility study for solar hot water
and a photovoltaic system, which generates electricity from the
sun. The study report and cost projections will determine whether
solar energy is appropriate for Forts Folle Avoine.
Each year the Burnett County Historical Society will continue to
add more energy saving procedures and environmentally friendly practices
at Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park. We are very proud of this
achievement and now include the Travel Green Wisconsin logo on all
our literature.
